Wainwright and Audrey Scott founded their own
farm stand and orchard in the 1960's. They had four children, though
Tom was the only one interested in continuing the farm tradition. Tom
graduated from East Lyme High School as well as the University of
Connecticut. With a degree in agriculture, Tom returned to join his
parents in the farm's operation.
Tom married Karen Wheeler in 1975 bringing her
into the family business. Tom and Karen took over the farm
completely when Wainwright died in 1989. Tom and Karen have four
children, Michelle (1978), Justin (1982), Allison (1986), and Colin
(1988). Michelle obtained a Master's degree in Sociology. She lives
in New Jersey and works in Manhattan. Justin is married . He and his
wife Katie have a one year old son, Jacob. Allison is working full
time on the farm with the family. Colin
is currently attending Three Rivers Community College in Norwich,
CT.
The farm certainly has seen many changes over the
years, some good, some bad. Presently our farming operation consists
of 125 acres of which we own 75 and lease the remainder. We grow fruits and vegetables including apples, peaches, sweet corn, pumpkins, strawberries, as well as, spring bedding plants, summer cut flowers, and fall mums. Our produce is marketed through our road side stand as well as pick your own.
